Eisner’s

It’s a big year for manga. Licenses fr. Japan are sprinkled around the nominees. Most don’t have a chance in hell, but it’s still nice.

Best penciller:
Takeshi Obata for dEATH Note and Hikaru no Go
Pia Guerra and Jose Marzan won for Y the last man.

Best continuing series:
Naoki Urasawa’s Monster
I’m pretty sure Y the Last Man will win

Best Publication for Kids:
Yotsubata&!
I’m stoked that this was nominated

Best Archival Collection:
Apollo’s Song

Best US Edition of International Material, JP
Ice Wanderer by Jiro Taniguchi
MW by Tezuka
Monster by Naoki Urasawa
New Engineering by Yuichi Yokoyama
Taiyo Matsumoto’s Tekkon Kinkreet (yes!)
Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms
A few bloggers were behind this book, and it worked.

Best Writer/Artist:
Fumi Yoshinaga
I think this is a strange choice since there are so many mangaka to choose from. But I also think it’s cool b/c she’s a BL creator. Who’da guessed?

Best Comics Related Book:
Manga: the Complete Guide by Jason Thompson
Understanding Manga and Anime by Robin Brenner

Best Short Story:
“Book”by YUichi Yokoyama fr. New Engineering
“Town of Evening Calm”by Fumiyo Kouno fr. Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms

Even if they don’t win, it’s the best year for manga at the Eisner’s.

DMP thought outside the box and nominated Fumi Yoshinaga in the best writer/artist category as well as in the International – Japan category. Hopefully seeing her nominated will encourage other manga publishers to nominate their creators and not just their titles.
